In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
SWELINE, Robert E. (Bob) - passed away with his wife and three daughters by his side. He is survived by Mona, his wife of 64 years, daughters Shelly (Doug Glenn), Christine (Hank) and Roberta (Jeff Maloney); grandchildren Michael (Samantha), Danika, Bob, Sasha (Tyler), Hailey (Donnie), Connor, Caitlyn, Kush; 6 great-grandchildren that all called him Papa, and special niece Diane.
Bob enlisted in the Navy in his hometown of Edmonton at navy reserve base H.M.C.S. Nonsuch at 17 (with his mother's permission). He did his basic training at H.M.C.S. Cornwallis where he boxed flyweight at 114 pounds. Being a Marine Engineer (stoker), most of his postings were on several classes of ships on both the East and West Coast including Canada's Aircraft Carrier H.M.C.S. Bonaventure (the Bonnie). Bob had three wonderful land postings, H.M.C.S. Shelburne, which was a joint R.C.N./U.S.N Oceanographic Research Station, where he met his wife Mona, N.D.H.Q. Ottawa as a life cycle manager and his last land posting was at Manadon Royal Engineering College in Plymouth, England where he taught naval engineering to students from many Commonwealth countries. For both Bob and Mona, this last posting was very special. Bob served 37 years in the navy and loved every minute of it. The only thing he loved more was his Boston Bruins. Bob retired as a C.P.O. 1st Class Engineer on November 19, 1993 and only golfing at Metchosin helped ease the pain of retirement.
A very special thank-you for the loving care and kindness received from the paramedics and the Royal Jubilee staff, especially Dr. Farrell and trauma nurse Brian, as well as McCall Gardens.
A Celebration of Bob's Life will be held at the Langford Legion, 761 Station Ave. on Sunday, April 20th from 1-3pm. (The Victoria Times Colonist 14 Mar 2025)
