Winnipeg Man was with York - Able bodied Seaman Gerald Ernest Guile, R.N., 22-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Guile 417 Martin Ave., was a crew member of the Cruiser York reported destroyed by enemy action at Crete. It was presumed he was safe as his parents had received no official word from the admiralty. Guile joined the Navy Oct. 19, 1938 - 12 days after, his application was accepted. He paid his fare across the Atlantic. He was attached to the York and saw action in the Mediterranean more than once. To took part in the torpedoing of an Italian destroyer several months ago. Guile was a Tribune Carrier for three years and with two brothers handled a large route in Elmwood. While stationed on the York, young guile became friendly with an English sailor, Able Bodied Seaman Arthur Jenner, a cousin of Mrs. J. Cox 450 Harbison Ave., neighbor of the guile family. The two chummed around together. (Winnipeg Tribune 21 May 1941)
