OUELLETTE, Lionel Eugene (Leo) - served 25 years in the RCN as a Steward. He joined the navy in Sudbury Ontario on 11 August 1948. Following his basic training in HMCS Cornwallis and his trade training in HMCS Naden, he was posted to HMCS Haida and served in the Korean war. He also served in HMC ships Sault Ste Marie, Minas, Crescent, Iroquois, Buckingham, Magnificent, Victoriaville, Skeena, and Preserver as well as Stadacona and Shearwater during his service in the RCN.CPO1 Ouellette retired from the navy on 29th August 1973.
Following his retirement from the navy, he worked for Bird-Stairs company in Halifax as their warehouse manager and salesman for 17years. While working at Bird-Stairs he and his wife Shirley built a retirement home on Ponhook Lake near Bridgewater NS and retired therein 1991.
Leo spent his retirement years enjoying daily walks with his wife and his dog CJ, and the regular visits of his 4 children and numerous grandchildren. Unfortunately, Leo developed dementia in his later years, and he and Shirley had to relocate from his lakeside home to Bridgewater NS. He was eventually placed in the veteran's ward in the Fisherman's Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg NS where he spent his remaining years until his death in March 2013 at the age of 83. CPO1 Ouellette was buried in Bridgewater NS.
Leo's sons, Michael Leo Ouellette and Jim Ouellette, both served in the Navy. Michael in the C.A.F. Naval Reserves and Jim in the C.A.F. Naval Reserves and Reg Force Navy.
