O'BRIEN, Joseph M. - Born in Fort William, Ontario and passed away in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. He served on at least 24 ships and was the Sailmaster on the Oriole under Captain E.T. Coggins when they sailed her from Halifax to Esquimalt in the mid 1950's. He made 3 trips to Korea for a total of 27 months. His first trip was for 11 months starting on 08 April 1951, just 4 days after he was married. He served in Esquimalt until 1959 then the Halifax until 1972. He then went to NDHQ in Ottawa where he retired in 1977. While he was posted to Halifax he served in Submarines and was stationed in England for 18 months for the Construction and Commission of HMCS Ojibwa. Joe leaves behind his wife Wilda in North Battleford, SK and 4 sons. Joe and wife Vickie in North Battleford, SK. Terence and wife Rosemarie in Grimsby, Ontario. Thomas and wife Sue in Edmonton, Alberta. Jacques and wife Nicole in Grimsby, Ontario. Grandchildren Terry, Mike, Alex, Sebastion, Sean, Abigail and Katherine. He served in CTTC from 12 February 1945 to 29 September 1945 and in the RCN from 23 September 1946 to 09 August 1977. He was buried at sea off of HMCS Oriole on 21 May 2003 by Padre T. Drabick, LT(N) at position 48 Degrees, 23' 31" N and 123 Degrees 26' 23" W.
