FRIESEN, Louis, Sto PO, V30201, RCNVR, MPK - 07 May 1944, HMCS VALLEYFIELD - Son of Annie Friesen, of Cloverdale, BC.

 

Stoker Petty Officer Friesen died when his ship, HMCS VALLEYFIELD, was torpedoed and sunk on 07 May 1944 by U-548. Of her crew of 163, there were only 38 survivors.

 

Petty Officer Louis Friesen of Port Alberni, British Columbia, was the son of Henry C. and Annie (Bartsch) Friesen of Cloverdale, Louis was born at Hepburn and was working as an oiler for Alberni Pacific Lumber when he enlisted on June 08, 1940 at Victoria, British Columbia. He married Katherine Mary (Schafer) at Liverpool, Nova Scotia, in 1942 (she was convicted the next year of criminal fraud and sentenced to three years; apparently she was drawing support payments on behalf of two different sailors).
