Alexander Edward (Ed) Rodger

Died: 07 Apr 2011, Kelowna, British Columbia

 

RODGER, Alexander Edward (Ed) - "Twilight and evening bell and after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell when I embark." Ed passed away in Kelowna, B.C. on 07 April 2011. Ed was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba 31 October 1937 and was accepted into the Naval Apprentice Program in 1954. During his Navy career as an Engine Room Artificer (ERA) in the navy. Ed served in many ships on both coasts and in the Naval Headquarters in Ottawa. He rose through the ranks to become a Chief ERA in several ships. After 30 years in the Navy, Ed retired and commenced a second career in Saint John, NB during the construction of 12 new naval frigates where he was a member of the design team. As each vessel was built, Ed took each ship to sea as a key member of the test and trails team. He had a third career at Point Hope Shipyard in Victoria managing ship refits and fourth as a consultant in the engineering division of the Ship Repair Unit in Esquimalt. Finally, he had a fifth career as a consultant and Quality Assurance Inspector for ship refits undertaken by Victoria Shipyards. He was an active member of the Community Policing in Peachland as well as the Naval Veterans Association in Penticton and both the Pacific and Atlantic C&PO's Associations. Ed enjoyed his retirement travelling and golfing. Ed leaves behind his loving wife Heather, son Alex (Carolyn), grandchildren Katelyn and Kyle in Kenora, Ont., daughter Jennifer in Kelowna as well as his sister Carol, a nephew and nieces in Langley and may friends from coast to coast. There will be no service at Ed's request. A family gathering will be held at a later date. "For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place, The flood may bear me far"
