MCDONALD, Richard Alexander Angus, AB Radar III, V46463, RCNVR, MPK - 07 May 1944, HMCS VALLEYFIELD - Son of Malcolm and Janet McDonald, of West Kildonan, Manitoba.
Able Seaman McDonald died when his ship, HMCS VALLEYFIELD, was torpedoed and sunk on 07 May 1944 by U-548. Of her crew of 163, there were only 38 survivors.
Able Seaman Richard A.A. McDonald, V46463, 20 years old, the only child of Malcolm and Janet B. McDonald of West Kildonan. Richard McDonald joined the R.C.N.V.R. in Chippawa in August of 1942. Richard, a hockey player, stayed in Winnipeg as a member of the 1943 Memorial Cup winning Winnipeg Rangers. Afterwards, he was sent to join the Valleyfield. McDonald Narrows in Kississing Lake was named after him in 1995.
