DAWES, James Calvin, AB AA3, V16586, RCNVR, MPK - 07 May 1944, HMCS VALLEYFIELD - Son of William Clarence and Laura Dawes, of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Husband of Jeanie Goldie Dawes, of Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.
Able Seaman Dawes died when his ship, HMCS VALLEYFIELD, was torpedoed and sunk on 07 May 1944 by U-548. Of her crew of 163, there were only 38 survivors.
James met his wife, Jeanie Dawes (née Campbell) of Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, while convalescing in a military hospital in Scotland. Dawes Lake, north east of Tadoule Lake was named after him in 1957.
