SMALE, Joseph Brett - We are sad to announce that Joe Smale passed away suddenly while cutting trees at the cottage. Joe was born in Stratford, Ont., to Joseph and Gwendolyn Smale. He proudly spent 36 years in the Royal Canadian Navy as an Ocean Grocer, travelling to ports all over the world. He sailed aboard HMCS HAIDA, CRESCENT, ST LAURENT, ANNAPOLIS, FRASER, ASSINIBOINE, PROTECTEUR and HALIFAX. It was while in the Navy that he had the opportunity to play hockey and meet lots of interesting people, including royalty. He also met Wendy and together they raised a family on a farm in the Annapolis Valley. He is survived by Wendy, Karen, Shannon, Kathleen and Shawn. He was predeceased by Gwendolyn, Joseph, Diane, Marcia, Jimmy and Noreen. Joe and Wendy retired to the house they built on the mountain in the Annapolis Valley. It was here that he spent time exploring the lakes by canoe and puttering around at small jobs. Cremation and a private family event have taken place with a Committal of Ashes to Sea aboard the HMCS SACKVILLE in the spring. The family would like to thank the Springfield and District Volunteer Fire Department (East Dalhousie) and other first responders for their assistance. Donations in memory can be made to the Springfield and District Volunteer Fire Department (East Dalhousie). “When I come to the end of the road, and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room, why cry for a soul set free, miss me a little, but not too long, and not with your head bowed low, remember the fun we shared, miss me, but let me go.” (Halifax Chronicle-Herald 25 Nov 2022
