Book of Remembrance

REYNOLDS, Frank Clarin, Lt, RCNVR, killed - 07 May 1944, HMCS VALLEYFIELD - Son of Lawrence and Ada F. Reynolds, of Toronto, Ontario; husband of Constance Reynolds, of Toronto.

Lieutenant Reynolds died when his ship, HMCS VALLEYFIELD, was torpedoed and sunk on 07 May 1944 by U-548. Of her crew of 163, there were only 38 survivors.  His body was recovered and he was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, St. John's, Newfoundland.

Lieutenant Frank C. Reynolds, one of Canada's young naval veterans, has been killed on active service, according to a telegram received at his home on Roxborough St. East. "We were expecting him home on leave between now and May 15," said Mrs. A. F. Reynolds, his mother. "When the wire came we thought it was bringing news of his homecoming, but instead, it announced he was dead." Lieutenant Reynolds was at Crete when his corvette, H.M.S. Violet was sent to the bottom. At that time he was serving with the Royal Navy. Last word the family received was that he was serving on a Canadian destroyer. For a time he was gunnery officer at H.M.C.S. Naden, at Victoria. Then he served on another training ship, H.M.C.S. Cornwallis. After a period of service at Port of Spain, Trinidad, he was transferred back to active duty on H.M.C.S. Cornwallis. Lieut. Reynolds was born in Toronto, and educated at Rosedale and University of Toronto schools. Before enlisting in the navy he was engaged in the brokerage business and in the employ of General Foods Ltd. His mother, wife Constance, and brother, J. W. Reynolds, the latter recently discharged from the army, reside on Roxborough St. East. (transcription from an unknown newspaper)

Note: The transcription reads that HMS VIOLET was sunk off Crete, however, the VIOLET survived the war and was sold for civilian use in 1947.
