Edward Lawrence De Costa

Died: 20 Jan 2013, Victoria, British Columbia

 

DE COSTA, Edward Lawrence - Surrounded by caregivers, family and friends, Edward passed peacefully in his sleep. Ed was born and raised in Esquimalt, BC. He had an active life as a young boy in all sports and outdoor activities, including soccer, baseball and boxing. During retirement, he enjoyed TV, travel and fishing. He was predeceased by Johanna, his wife of 68 years and his loving son, Edward. He is survived by his other children and their spouses; daughters, Eileen De Costa (Earl Wicks), Joanne De Costa (Joe Romano); sons, Michael De Costa and Robert De Costa and many special grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dad had a wonderful life and a great career. He served in the RCN from 1938-1958. He participated in the battle of the Atlantic. He survived the sinking of HMCS Fraser and served in the Korean War. His other career of 10 years was in Shop 3 at Dockyard. He was the specialist in steering and propulsion. Ed was an Esquimalt Pioneer, Alderman in Esquimalt for 17 years. He was a founding director of the CRD, Esquimalt Rec Centre and Archie Browning Sports Arena. He was a Director on the Victoria General Hospital Board and was instrumental in the dedication of the Gorge Kinsmen Park, Saxe Point Park and Highrock Cairn. Dad was an active member of the ESQ Legion, ESQ CPO Association and the Peninsula Lodge for over 60 years. Ed will be remembered as a great father, loving grandpa and a wonderful mentor to all of whom he touched in his 94 years. He will live in our hearts forever, never forgotten. Rest in peace Dad. Thanks a bunch to all staff, A3 and caregivers to dad at the Broadmead Care Centre. You were always there for Pops. You shared an activity, laugh, coffee, wine or sing song with dad. He was happy and content in his final stay with you. Love ya all. A Memorial Services will be held at McCall's Downtown, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Broadmead Care Centre, 4579 Chatterton Way, Victoria, BC, V8X 4Y7.
