They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
EVANS, William Leo, L/Sto, V23334, RCNVR, MPK: 20 Sep 1943, HMCS ST CROIX - Son of Mr. and Mrs. James Evans; stepson of Rose Evans, of Montreal, Quebec.
Leading Stoker Evans died when his ship, HMCS ST CROIX, was torpedoed and sunk on 20 Sep 1943 by U-305. Eighty-one of her crew were rescued by HMS ITCHEN. HMS ITCHEN was torpedoed and sunk 3 days later on 23 Sep 1941 by U-952. Only two of the crew of HMS ITCHEN and one of the survivors of HMCS ST CROIX were rescued by the Polish merchant ship Wisla. As there is no list of survivors picked up by ITCHEN, all lost are presumed lost when ST CROIX was sunk.
