GARRARD, William Arthur Bordett, LCdr, RCN(R), died - 27 May 1945, HMCS NADEN - Husband of Emma W. Garrard, of Victoria, British Columbia.

 

William Garrard served in the 7th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War 01 Dec 1916 - 11 Jul 1919 as a Lieutenant. He was woudned in the Battle of Cambrai.

 

Lieut. Commander W. A. B. Garrard. M.B.E., died at Shaughnessy Military Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the sinking of HMCS WEYBURN during the Second World War. He was buried in the Veterans Cemetery, Esquimalt, British Columbia.  He was the Executive Officer (First Lieutenant) in HMCS WEYBURN when she struck a mine while in the Mediterranean.  While he was crossing between his ship and HMS WIVERN, which had arrived to rescue survivors, his leg was caught between the two ships and his ankle severely crushed.  His foot was amputated onboard HMS WIVERN by Lt Philip Raymond Evans, RNR, who himself suffered broken ankles when WIVEN was practically blown out of the water by an exploding depth charge.
