MORGAN, Gordon Edwin - of Sackville, Nova Scotia passed away on January 8, 2025. Born in Toronto, On in 1936, he was the son of the late Fedelma and David Morgan.
He was the loving father of daughter Kristene; sons, Rob and Scott (Pam) and grandfather of cherished grandchildren, Lindsey, Shae-Lynn, Justin, Alder, Garrett, Ethan and Kaley. He was predeceased by brother Richard and sister Jane (Greg) Foxboro ON. Survived by sister, Gail, San Diego, Cal.; sister-in-law, Barbara; brother-in-law, Greg, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Gord joined Canada’s navy during the Korean War and served in many of the navy’s ships on both coasts, retiring in Dec 1988 after 36 years regular force and 5 years additional reserve service. He was a graduate of St Mary’s University. Upon retirement from Canada’s military, Gord worked in the shipbuilding industry for 7 years, retiring in 1995 to work as a volunteer in his community. He served as a member of the Children’s Wish Foundation in Saint John, N.B. and was an organizer of Terry Fox Runs during his 40 year career in The Navy. An organizer, coach, and supporter of soccer in the local region, he chaired the provincial discipline committee of soccer N.S. for 4 years. He served on the boards of Halifax Regional Development Agency, Lake District Recreation Assoc., Sackville Rivers Assoc., Sackville Heights Community Centre, the Cobequid Cultural Centre for The Arts Society, and he was Chairman of the Sackville Central Region Local Development Assoc., the Sackville Heritage Park Advisory Committee, the Sackville Drive Advisory Committee.
In 1997, he led the formation of the Sackville Community Development Assoc., and served as it’s President for 13 years, and for 10 of those Years, Chairman of it’s Sackville Patriot Days Committee. He was instrumental in the formation of the Sackville Community Band. In 1999, he was co-chair of the Sackville Millenium Committee. In 2000 he was awarded the HRM Mayor’s Award. In 2001 he was honoured as a Provincial Volunteer, and in 2002 was presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee medal for his community work. In 2005 he was chosen as Sackville’s Volunteer of the Year.
Cremation has taken place and burial at sea will take place at a later date. Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Calais Branch 162, 45 Sackville Crossroads, Sackville N.S. on Sunday February 23, 2025 from 1-4pm. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to a Charity of your choice.
