GUTHRIE, Robert Milford, LS, 4472, RCN, MPK - 07 May 1944, HMCS VALLEYFIELD - Son of Peter and Isabel Guthrie, of Brandon, Manitoba.
Leading Seaman Guthrie died when his ship, HMCS VALLEYFIELD, was torpedoed and sunk on 07 May 1944 by U-548. Of her crew of 163, there were only 38 survivors.
Leading Seaman Robert M. Guthrie son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter and Isabel Guthrie, of 242 14th street, of Brandon Manitoba have been advised that their son, Leading Seaman Robert Milford Guthrie, is now presumed dead. He was born and educated in Brandon, attending Central, Alexander, Earl Oxford schools and Brandon Collegiate, enlisting in the Canadian Navy on graduation, in 1941. He had seen service on the Pacific, Atlantic and Mediterranean, and was in his 20th year. As a youth he was prominent in sports circles here. Besides his parents, he has three other brothers, all serving with the Canadian Navy. Guthrie Point on Molson Lake was named after him in 1994.
