BAREFOOT, Gordon William, Sto, V54372, RCNVR, MPK - 07 May 1944, HMCS VALLEYFIELD - Son of Gordon Leslie and Mary (née Kilmister) Barefoot, of St. James, Manitoba.

 

Stoker Barefoot died when his ship, HMCS VALLEYFIELD, was torpedoed and sunk on 07 May 1944 by U-548. Of her crew of 163, there were only 38 survivors.

 

Gordon Barefoot's parents had a store at Inchkeith 1929-37 and he attended Golden Ridge School. The family moved to Winnipeg and Gordon played hockey there and one year in the Detroit Red Wings farm system. He was born at Antelope northeast of Gull Lake and was working as a fitter for the Hamilton Steel Car Corp. when he enlisted on February 12, 1943 at Hamilton, Ontario. Barefoot Lakes, in the Nipigon area of Ontario was named after Stoker Barefoot on May 05, 1960.
