In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
BUCHANAN, Lloyd - Lloyd Buchanan found direction in his life upon enlisting 15 Nov 1940 in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve.
Only completing 7th grade, he quickly proved he had exceptional aptitudes and intelligence. He rose from Ordinary Seaman through Ordinary Signalman, Trained Operator (Visual Signals), Acting Leading Signalman, and finally Leading Signalman where he excelled at Flashing Lights, Morse Flag and Semaphore; earning scores of 97.5, 100, 100, and 98.
Serving aboard 9 warships and 17 shore establishments, his course in life was forever altered when he met a cute cashier - Frances Cluett Fudge - employed by Canadian Legion Hostel during liberty in summer 1943.
After a short courtship, they married in the Protestant chapel, HMC Dockyard, Halifax, Sunday, 13 Feb 1944. Ten days later, Lloyd Buchanan was deployed to sea for 169 days aboard the ill-fated HMCS REGINA K234. He survived its 08 Aug1944 torpedoing and sinking for which their future 6 daughters, 15 grandchildren, and many descendants are forever grateful. — Allen Lloyd Buzzard, 1st grandchild/eldest cousin
“Nanny”
showed true love. She was loyal to Lloyd Buchanan. She was also a rock to
several of us cousins in our lives growing
We always had good vibes whenever around “Nanny” - and her laughable cackle. She was always humble, happy and positive; even though she’d try to con one or two of us grandkids into buying her cigarettes, we couldn’t help but love her back.
Frances “Nanny” Cluett Buchanan (née Fudge) was not just a petite grandma with eyes as blue as Lake Tahoe but also a true friend who any of us could confide in. Everyone loved “Nanny.” — Wendy Lyn Green, 2nd grandchild/2nd eldest cousin
