They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
ROY, Frank Norrie, Stwd, V45225, RCNVR, MPK 24 Nov 1944, HMCS SHAWINIGAN - Son of Frank Norrie Roy, and of Catherine Roy, of Victoria, British Columbia.
Steward Roy died when HMCS SHAWINIGAN was sunk by U-1228 on 24 Nov 1944. Of her crew of 91, there were no survivors.
Son of Mrs. Catherine Roy, 1118 Pandora Avenue, who is among those listed as missing following the sinking of the Shawinigan, ninth corvette Canada has lost. He is a steward. For 23 months Frank Roy called the Shawinigan home. He enlisted in august, 1942, and in December of that year was posted to the corvette that had since been in continuous service on convoy duty. Last March Frank spend his furlough in Victoria and in Calgary where an elder brother, Bruce, still lives, and where he himself was born. Another brother, LS Leonard Roy, RCNVR, now stationed here, has seen action in the South Pacific and in Alaskan waters. The missing seaman had always wanted to join the navy, his mother said, and he joined as soon as they would accept him. (The Victoria Daily Colonist 10 Dec 1944)
