They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
WEBB, Valentine Gordon, Sto PO, 21195, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Mrs. George Burland, of San Jose, California, U. S.A.; husband of Mary Eileen Webb. of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Stoker Petty Officer Webb died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.
Stoker Petty Officer Valentine Gordon Webb, age 32 leaves his wife; Mary Eileen Webb, of Vancouver an eight year old daughter and three-year old twin sons. They reside at 4321 Cambridge Street. Stoker Petty Officer Webb joined the navy as a lad of 14 and had just passed his examinations for chief petty officer. He left Vancouver when the war started, and joined the destroyer HMCS Fraser. He was trapped in the engine room when she sank off Bordeaux. For more than an hour he stood in water up to his neck, and lived only to die on HMCS Margaree when it went down.
