They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
SIMPKIN, Donald Harry, Leading Victualling Assistant, 40525, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Mary E. Simpkin, of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Leading Victualling Assistant Simpkin died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.
Leading Victualling Assistant Donald Harry Simpkin of Halifax was to celebrate his 21st birthday the day after the collision. His family had been expecting Donald home in time for a big birthday celebration.
