RCNVR 1929 - 1933 RCN 1933 - 1958
COCKRILL, Cecil Raymond - He was born at Vancouver BC on March 3, 1911. He worked as a mill hand in Vancouver and joined the RCNVR 1/4 Company at HMCS Discovery in 1929. He joined the RCN as an Ordinary Seaman on May 8, 1933. He was made an Able Seaman in 1934, a Leading Torpedoman in 1940, a Petty Officer in 1942 and a Chief Petty Officer in 1943. He retired on May 7, 1958.
He served in the following ships and establishments: Naden; Stadacona; Skeena; HMS Dragon; HMS Apollo; St. Laurent; Prince Henry; Niobe; Ontario; Cornwallis; and Royal Roads.
During his navy time, he served as a Physical Training Instructor and late became an instructor in Chemical, Biological and Nuclear Warfare at the NBCD School at Naden. During the early 1940's, he was attached to the college at HMCS Royal Roads. There he was in charge of the boat shed and trained the cadets in boat work and ropework.
After a long and distinguished career in the navy, he retired and moved to the USA and found work with Dick Powell and June Allyson the movie stars. He was their ranch foreman in their home in Mandeville Canyon. After a period of four years, he moved on to other interests and spent the last years of his life in Victoria with his old shipmates and his family and grandchildren. He passed away on July 24, 1981.
He was married to Majorie Viola Maides and later Lorna Isabell Wood. He had one son, James Walter Cockrill.
