GILES, David Henry, AB A/SD, V31768, RCNVR, MPK - 07 May 1944, HMCS VALLEYFIELD - Son of Mary Giles, of Hudson Bay Junction, Saskatchewan.
Able Seaman Giles died when his ship, HMCS VALLEYFIELD, was torpedoed and sunk on 07 May 1944 by U-548. Of her crew of 163, there were only 38 survivors.
Able Seaman David Henry Giles of Hudson Bay was the son of Albert and Mary Giles. The family moved from Saltcoats to Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan in 1930. Able Seaman Giles was educated at Hudson Bay Junction and Saltcoats. He worked for the Saskatchewan Liquor Commission Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. He enlisted into the navy in March 1942. He leaves besides his mother, four brothers, O.S. Tom at St. Hyacinthe; Stocker (first class) Milton, at Halifax; Sgt. Albert James (bud) in Canadian Dental Corps.
