DAOUST, Joseph Harold Hector, Sto 1c, V61903, RCNVR, MPK - 07 May 1944, HMCS VALLEYFIELD - Son of Joseph and Helen Daoust, of Williamstown, Ontario.

Hector Daoust of Williamstown, Ontario was the cousin of the book author Bob D'Aoust, Waterloo, Ontario. Bob was fortunate to have had an opportunity to interview Stanley C. Tapson, one of only three remaining survivors of the H.M.C.S. Valleyfield sinking. Stanley personally knew Hector and provided information about Hector's ordeal after the torpedoing. Hector and Stanley were off-watch below deck in their hammocks at the time the torpedo struck. Only the sailors who were near the escape hatch made it out. Stanley was one of the ones who made it out into the icy waters after their ship was lost.

Stoker 1st Class Daoust died when his ship, HMCS VALLEYFIELD, was torpedoed and sunk on 07 May 1944 by U-548. Of her crew of 163, there were only 38 survivors.  Prior to enlisting, Joseph Daoust worked as an apprentice tool maker for the Northern Electric Company, Ltd., Montreal, Q.C.

Hector's brother, Telegraphist Raymond A. Doust, also served in the RCNVR during the Second World War.  His brother Sgt J. C. Albert Daout served in the RCAF during the Second World War.
