Thomas Mayno Taylor

Lieutenant-Commander, O-72203, RCN / C.A.F. (Navy)

Born: 29 Dec 1936          Died: 02 Jul 2024

TAYLOR, Thomas Mayno - “…you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than those you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from safe harbor. Catch the wind in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover”. – Mark Twain

Nobody would say that Mayno played it too safe. He lived his life on land and at sea unbridled. Yet through the wave-like highs and lows that impacted his work, his adventures and his family, LCdr Mayno Taylor “Carried On”! We are all grateful and blessed that he did.

Mayno is survived by his loving wife Cathy Taylor; his sons, Kevin and Mike Taylor (Stephanie) and stepson John Richardson (Dena); and beloved grandchildren, Cara and Jacqueline Todd; Jaden Taylor Higgins; Dylan, Liam and Cassie Taylor; Jack and Melve Richardson; and great grandson, Taylor Todd Henneberry. Also, sister and brother-in-law Susan and Richard Schmaltz, nieces Andrea, Amanda and nephew Jason; brother-in law John Persson and nephews Leif, Eric, Chris and niece Marta. Predeceased by his ex-wife Shelagh McCulloch-Taylor (1938-2024), his sons Sean Francis Taylor (1964-1965) and Patrick Mayno Taylor (1962-1980), his sister Carmen Persson (1933-2020).

Born in Ottawa, ON in 1936 to Margaret (nee Davis) and Thomas Herbert Taylor he received a BA from McMaster in 1958. After some years working with the Mayno Davis Lumber Company in Ottawa, Mayno pursued his true passion as a Royal Canadian Navy Officer. From enlistment in 1958 to retirement in 1991 he served on many ships such as HMCS’s INCH ARRAN, RESTIGOUCHE, GATINEAU, TERRA NOVA and MORESBY. His retirement from the Navy in 1991 did not quell his passion for the ocean. Mayno, Cathy and select friends sailed the seas for decades on his sailboats the Paddy Mayno and the Tomcat. When older age caused him to relinquish Command of his own boats he and Cathy became frequent customers of the cruise industry partaking on 28 cruises to amazing ports in England, Ireland, Russia, Egypt, Alaska and the Baltics to name a few.

Family, socializing and friendship, were his other true passions. In support of his sister Susan, Mayno and Cathy volunteered on two Guatemalan missions building homes and structures for the poor and destitute. Over nearly forty years running he and his best friends would hit the fishing camp to have a few drinks, share tales and catch the occasional fish. Peter, Brucie, Lockie, Dougie, Gilles, Bob, Barry, Roly, Kevin, Mike, Gord, John, Cam…….too many to list….friends forever. Mayno was loved for his spirit, his sense of humour, his intelligence, his compassion and his overall character. Although covid placed a moratorium on the cruising life for a few years, in April 2024 Mayno was not to be denied. He rounded up all his sons and grandsons and lead them on a fantastic “never to be forgotten” trans-Atlantic cruise on the Celebrity Equinox. As fate would have it this was to be his last on this earth. Fair winds and following seas Mayno…….you made this world a better place.
