Samuel Arthur Peet

PEET, Samuel Arthur - 92, Dartmouth. It is with great sadness that the family announces his sudden passing while visiting family in St. John's, NL on August 28, 2010. Born in St. John's, he was the son of the late Harold John Peet and Winifred Parsons. Sam joined the Royal Navy at the start of the Second World War. He was a veteran of many naval battles, including the Bismark, the Murmansk Run, and survived the sinking of the HMCS Valleyfield in the North Atlantic 400 miles off St. John's. Following the war, he worked for Trans Canada Airlines in St. John's. Following Confederation when Canada joined Newfoundland, Sam was the first Newfoundlander to enlist in the Royal Canadian Navy. He subsequently served on several ships, including carriers, destroyers, frigates, tankers and naval auxiliary. After retiring from the RCN, Sam served as an officer and captain in the Merchant Marine. In 1936, Sam met and later married Marjorie. They spent 68 wonderful years together. Sam was happiest spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sam will be loving remembered for is charming wit and storytelling. Dad had a passion for his writing and was a natural artist. Dad captured his wartime experiences in his novel "Of Other Times", which he wrote for his family. Dad's leisure time was happily spent sailing and travelling. Sam's favourite traditional naval toast was "Absent Friends". Sam was recently predeceased by his loving wife Marjorie. He was also predeceased by eight brothers and three sisters. Sam is lovingly remembered by his children: daughters Sandra Lambie (James), Dartmouth; Janet Pratt (Peter), Newmarket, Ont.; sons Greg Peet (Carol) Ken Peet (Iris) and Stanleigh Peet (Janis), all of Dartmouth. He will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Janet Bryson (Steve Myrer), Sean Bryson, Alan Pratt (Daryl), Michael Pratt (Misty), Dan Peet (Lori), Tami Peet, Erin Peet, Gregg Peet (Deidre), Mallory Peet and Taylor Peet. Sam had nine great-grandchildren: Ryan and Ben Myrer; Paige, Laiken, Nolan and Sophie Pratt; Owen and Oliver Pratt and Madeleine Peet. Sam is also survived by his sister-in-law Barbara Peet, Holiday, Fla. Sam will also be missed by his nieces and nephews who gave him many wonderful memories. The family would like to thank the Peet and Butler families for their kindness and support during our private services held at "The Cabin" in Newfoundland. A special thanks to Ron and Pat Butler. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 8 in the Chapel of Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Interment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. A reception will follow. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or The Salvation Army.
