MITCHELL, Patrick Allen, LS, 3467, RCN, MPK - 24 Nov 1944, HMCS SHAWINIGAN - Son of Hilda Mitchell, of Vancouver, British Columbia.

 

LS Mitchell died when HMCS SHAWINIGAN was sunk by U-1228 on 24 Nov 1944. Of her crew of 91, there were no survivors.

 

On May 07, 1942 Leading Torpedoman Patrick A. Mitchell, 20, has returned east after spending leave with his mother, Mrs. Hilda Mitchell, and his sister at their home on Haywood Avenue. Mitchell joined the Royal Canadian Navy in October, 1939, and went to sea two months later. A brother, Theo, is training as an observer with the R.C.A.F. at Lethbridge. On December 14, 1944 Leading Seaman Patrick Mitchell, son of Mrs. Hilda Mitchell, 2309 Haywood Avenue, is among those reported missing in the sinking of HMCS Shawinigan. Joining the navy three months before the outbreak of war, he went through the blitz of England, and later served in the North Sea, Iceland and Russia. Following a month's leave at home and a petty officers' course at Halifax, he served in the West Indies and aboard HMCS Huron during the Normandy invasion. Previous to joining up he was a Sea Cadet. His brother, Sergeant T.E. Mitchell, is a photographer with the R.C.A.F.
