CASWELL, Robert Grant - It is with heavy hearts that we announce that CPO2 Retired Navy, Robert Grant Caswell, affectionately known as Bob stood his last watch. Bob crossed the bar peacefully at Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Building on Monday, May 13, 2024. Born in Prince Rupert, BC, Bob was the son of the late Howard Grant Caswell and the late Isabelle Campbell (Marsan). Bob is survived by his sister Shirley Bedard (Caswell) (Terrace, BC), Carole Arsenault (Rouyn-Noranda), and brother Bertrand Lachapelle (Val-d'Or). Bob is also survived by his wife and best friend Meranda Caswell (Bell) and his four children: Stacey (Mark), Dale, Natasha, and Michelle, and 6 granddaughters, Allison, Katharine, Natalie (Ontario), Alliah (Nova Scotia), Nola, and Lauryn (Ontario), along with many nieces and nephews.

Aside from his parents, Bob was predeceased by his first wife, Theresa (Worth), and his best friend Sherman (Sam) Goucher who served in the Royal Canadian Navy with Bob and was like a brother to him. They spent many weekends playing cards (45s) and our families shared many memories and good times over the years.

Bob joined the Royal Canadian Navy at 17 years old and served as Hull Tech from which he retired, Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class after serving in the Gulf War on HMCS Protecteur. Bob served aboard many of H.M.C ships during his time in the Navy including HMCS Cormorant, HMCS Margaree, HMCS Iroquois, and HMCS Preserver. Bob also worked for the Canadian Frigate Program in Saint John, NB and NDHQ in Hull, QC and after he retired from the Navy he worked for the Irving Shipyard in Halifax, ran a vending machine business with Meranda and a small commercial cleaning company. He had contracts with Dental Clinics in the HRM which he and his daughter Natasha would clean together. Eventually he turned over the business to Natasha and he worked at the Irving Shipyard in Halifax until he retired.

Over the years, Bob was a handy man and had kept a pristine workshop at home that he would tinker in with his son Dale. Bob always enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and family over the years and he even learned to tie his own flies. Bob was once in a band that would practice in his basement and Time Zone was known to play at the Moon or The Palace in Halifax and the local Legion. Bob was once very active with the Royal Canadian Legion in Enfield, NS and spent years coaching girl's soft ball and travelling across the Maritimes his daughter Stacey and her ball teams. Bob enjoyed bowling, playing darts and loved to host the Shipyard staff parties and lobster boils. Bob was a gregarious character who loved to talk, loved a good time and his Captain.

A special thanks to Dr. Clair Nowlan and all the nursing staff at V6 Jubilee, Veteran’s Memorial Hospital for taking such great care of Bob during his time at Camp Hill. Janice you are a gem, thank you.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service per Bob’s wishes. If you wish to pay your respects, please raise a glass and toast Bob and share your memories and words of comfort with his family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CMHA Nova Scotia (Canadian Mental Health Association Nova Scotia).

Rest in peace Bob, Dad, Grampy, Chief, Caz, Coach (Harbourside Regional Crematorium)
