STEWART, William George, Sig, V8866, RCNVR, MPK - 29 Apr 1944, HMCS ATHABASKAN - Son of George T. and Hilda Stewart of Hamilton, Ontario.
Sigmalman Stewart died when his ship, HMCS ATHABASKAN, was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel on 29 Apr 1944. The province of Ontario honoured Signalman Stewart by naming Stewart Lake in his honour.
Signalman William George Stewart, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.T. Stewart of Hamilton, who was reported missing when the Athabaskan was sunk last April, is now presumed dead. He had been a member of the crew of the ship from the time it was commissioned up to the time it was lost in action. After attending Benneto School and Wentworth technical school here, he served his apprenticeship with a Hamilton engraving firm. At the time of his enlistment, in August, 1941, he was employed by a Toronto firm of engravers. Two brothers, James and David, are serving with the R.C.N.V.R.
