Larry was born in 1942 in Edmonton, Alta., to Cyril and Ella Phillips. He attended public school and joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1959.

Larry moved to Nova Scotia and met the love of his life – Mary – whom he married in 1962. Together, they raised three sons, Rick, Dion, and Larry.
