LYONS, Nelson, Sto 1c, V35602, RCNVR, MPK - 07 May 1944, HMCS VALLEYFIELD - Son of James and Fledda Lyons, of Toronto, Ontario.

 

Stoker Lyons died when his ship, HMCS VALLEYFIELD, was torpedoed and sunk on 07 May 1944 by U-548. Of her crew of 163, there were only 38 survivors. 

 

Stoker Nelson Lyons, age 22, R.C.N.V.R., was a Stoker First Cass, is also reported missing at sea, according to word received by his mother, Mrs. Fiedda Lyons, Brock Ave. "Tomorrow is his 23rd birthday," his grandmother, Mrs. A. Devitt, said. His mother was prostrated at the news. Stoker Lyons has one brother, Ronald, also in the R.C.N.V.R., and another brother, Lonnie, is in the army with the Prince Edward Island Highlanders. A sister, Mrs. V. Bruner, lives in Toronto. Stoker Lyons was born in Darlington township and moved to Toronto with his family at an early age, and attended Parkdale and Shirley Street public schools and Western Technical school. He enlisted on May 4, 1942, and served for some time on H.M.C.S. Fort William. (Source: Ultimate Sacrifice by Robert D'Aoust)
