GILLARD, George Leander (Lea) - King's Daughters' Hospital, Duncan, the Rev. George Lea Gillard, M.B.E., C.D., aged 65 years of Shawnigan Lake, a resident of Victoria and district since 1955, born in Newfoundland. He leaves his wife, Grace; one son, Charles and daughter Marie, both at home; a daughter Elthea in Vienna, and a son, Howard, with the R.C.M.P., Ottawa; six grandchildren; three brothers, Baxter, Pleman and Robert In Englee, Newfoundland; four sisters, Mrs. Paul Lilley in Lewisporte, Newfoundland; Mrs. C. Simms in St. Catharines, Ontario; Mrs. A. Layton in Powell River, and Mrs. J. Luther of Toronto; numerous nieces and nephews. He was well-known as Command Chaplain, R.C.N., retiring in 1957, and served overseas in the Second World War. He was an associate minister of Metropolitan United Church, Victoria, in 1957-58, and for eight years Pastor of Shawnigan Lake and Mill Bay United Church. Funeral services under auspices of Victoria Presbytery will be held in Metropolitan United Church, Quadra and Pandora Ave. on Friday, Oct. 7, at 3:00 p.m. Rev A.G. MacLeod, Rev. U. Laite, Rev E. Laura Butler and Chaplain A.G. Faraday participating. Interment in Royal Oak Burial Park. McCall Bros. Funeral Directors Ltd. in charge of arrangements.

 

GILLARD, George Leander (Lea) - Rites Today For Padre VICTORIA (CP) - Funeral service will be held here today for former navy padre Rev. George Lea Gillard, M.B.E., who died Tuesday in hospital at Duncan, at the age of 65. Until his retirement in 1957, he was Command Chaplain at HMCS Naden, Esquimalt. Padre Gillard served aboard the RCN Supply Ship Prince David during the Second World War and landed with the navy at Normandy on D-Day. He was awarded the M.B.E. for "Faithful service ashore and at sea, upholding the high traditions of the church and the chaplain service." (Vancouver Sun, Friday, 07 Oct 1966)

 

M.B.E. Citation - GILLARD, George Leander, Chaplain II Class (P) - Member - Order of the British Empire (MBE), RCN - Awarded as per Canada Gazette of 13 June 1946 and London Gazette of 11 June 1946.  "This Chaplain has served faithfully and zealously both ashore and at sea, upholding the high traditions of the Church and the Chaplaincy Service of the Royal Canadian Navy in a marked degree. At all times, he has carried out his duties earnestly even beyond that which duty required. The interest and care shown for Naval Personnel and their dependants have been outstanding, and his faithfulness in the ministrations of the Church unexcelled."
