SNOWSELL, Ernest Walter, AB, 3308, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Henry and Hilda Snowsell, of Kelowna, British Columbia.

 

Able Seaman Snowsell died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.

 

AB Ernest Walter Snowsell was born at Kelowna, BC, on April 13, 1920. He was educated at the Junior and High Schools in this city. He joined the RCN at Esquimalt, BC, in October, 1938, and, for seven years previously, had been a member of the Grenville Corps of Sea Cadets. Snowsell was first a survivor from HMCS Fraser, which was sunk off the Coast of France in June, 1940, and shortly after that he spoke over the BBC from London. He was lost aboard HMCS Margaree, which was sunk in a collision on the night of October 22nd, 1940, in the North Atlantic Ocean. He was unmarried and is survived by his parents, who reside at RR 3, Kelowna, BC.
