They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
OLSON, Clarence Joseph, OS, 3326, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Ludvik and Bertha Olson, of Invermay, Saskatchewan.
Ordinary Seaman Olson died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.
Ordinary Seaman Clarence Joseph Olson of Ottawa, Ontario, was the son of Ludvik and Bertha Martha (Brune) Olson, a Norwegian couple who came from North Dakota to farm in 1904, and was among the earliest settlers in the Invermay area. Clarence was born at Canora and was farming in the Ottawa area when he enlisted, April 20, 1939 at Halifax, Nova Scotia.
