BAKER, Thomas Morley, AB, 3265, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Harry Edgar and Agnes Baker, of Victoria, British Columbia.

 

Able Seaman Baker died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, collided with the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.

 

Able Seaman Thomas Morley Baker was the son of Harry E. Baker who came from Nottingham, England, to Tantallon, Saskatchewan to operate a butcher shop in 1909, his mother Agnes was born at Tantallon. The family moved to Victoria in 1934. Thomas was a labourer when he enlisted.

HMCS FRASER - Drafted to FRASER 05 May 1939

* Rated Able Seaman, RCN 19 Feb 1940

* Lent to NADEN from FRASER 25-30 May 1939

* Survived the sinking of HMCS FRASER

HMCS MARGAREE - Drafted to MARGAREE 06 Sep 1940.  Commissioning crew
