PYE, Travis Broderick - a marine engineering mechanic on the frigate HMCS St. John's. Age 22. He was born and raised in St. Lewis, NL and joined the navy in August 2003. He previously served on the HMCS Ville de Québec and the HMCS Fredericton. LS Pye drowned after accidentally falling from a jetty into Nassau harbor while his ship was visiting the Bahamas. LS Pye is survived by mother, Catherine Pye; father, Roy Pye (Nancy); sister Vanessa Poole (Dennis); brothers Marcus and Matthew (Ethel); three nieces and a nephew; his grandmothers and large extended family. He will be missed by his circle of friends including those aboard all the ships he has sailed on but especially by Desmond Whiteway, his longtime friend and roommate. His sister released this statement: "Travis was an outgoing and adventurous person. Raised in a small community in Labrador, he went on to serve his country with pride. Travis loved his job, especially when it took him to faraway places. The customs and languages of other countries fascinated him, and appealed to his sense of adventure. But no matter how far he traveled, Travis always kept in touch. Family was very important to Travis. He loved us all so much, especially his nephew and nieces. He was very proud of his Labrador heritage. Whether snowmobiling in the winter or salmon-fishing in the summer, he loved the outdoors. Blessed with a great imagination, Travis was an artistic person who expressed himself beautifully through the visual arts. We are very proud of Travis and his choice to serve his country. He will be sadly missed, but never forgotten." Funeral was held on November 13, 2006 at The Church of St. Mary the Virgin.
