KIRKWOOD, Thomas Andrews, OS, 3499, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Thomas Robert and Elinor Kirkwood, of Outremont, Quebec.

 

Ordinary Seaman Kirkwood died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was lost in a collision with the freight Port Fairy while MARGAREE was escorting Convoy OL.8.  143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them being survivors of the sinking of HMCS FRASER.

 

Thomas' brother, Francis Lussier Kirkwood, served in the RCNVR, later transferring to the RCAF.  Flying Officer Kirkwood lost his life in a plane crash (into the ocean) during air operations near Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland.  His body was never recovered and his is officially listed as missing, presumed killed.

HMCS FRASER - Drafted to FRASER 06 Mar 1940.  Survived the sinking of HMCS FRASER on 25 Jun 1940
