COUTTS, Harry Richard - It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Harry Richard Coutts, 91, of Bedford, NS, on December 26, 2024 at home. Born in Tilbury, ON, in 1933, he was the third of five children of the late Martin and Lea (Marchand) Coutts. He was also predeceased by his brother Donald, and sisters Shirley Ann and Mary Lou. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Jean (Whitson) Coutts, his brother Martin Jr. (Bud), Kitchener, ON, his four children: Stephen, Bedford, NS; Susan (Stuart Watson), Mississauga, ON; David, Bedford, NS; and Carol Ann (David Jarrett), Dartmouth, NS. Papa will also be dearly missed by grandchildren Katie, Kim, Andrew, Heather, Matthew, Michael, Graeme, Grace , Adam, Nick and Ben. He attended the University of Windsor (Ontario) for two years, followed by the Royal Military College in Kingston, ON. He went to study for five years at the Royal Naval Engineering College in Plymouth, England, where he met, and married the love of his life, Jean, a registered nurse. They moved to Canada to raise a family in Victoria, BC, Dartmouth, NS, Montreal, QC, Riverview, NB, eventually settling back in Dartmouth, Mississauga, ON, and Bedford, NS. He ultimately attained the rank of Lt. Commander in the Royal Canadian Navy having served as Engineer Officer of Ships or Staff Officer Engineering throughout his proud naval career including on/at the HMCS Restigouche, Halifax Dockyard, HMCS Ottawa, Maritime Commander Staff and as Principal Naval Overseer in Montreal. After retiring from the navy, he served in similar capacities at Marine Atlantic and as a sought-after consultant. Once fully retired, he and Jean focused their attention on being amazing, involved and loving grandparents, attending endless recitals, hockey and soccer tournaments and paddling regattas. They hosted numerous parties and family gatherings. Harry and Jean enjoyed travelling and lived part-time for a number of joyous years in a retirement community in North Port, FL, and cherished the many friendships established there. The family is thankful for the caring hands and hearts of Dr. Clark, nurse Holly and public health nurse Hazel for the amazing support and above and beyond care that they provided. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 23 at 11am in the Chapel of Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive. Burial In Oakridge Memorial Gardens. Deacon Art Mitchell officiating.
