SCHERBER, Frank - passed away peacefully in Ottawa 6 October 2024 at age 76.
He is survived by brother Mark (Carol), nieces Claire (Douglas) and Brittany, and three great-nephews and a great-niece. Frank was predeceased by his brother John and parents John and Irma.
Frank graduated from the University of Manitoba and had a very distinguished career in the Royal Canadian Navy. He commanded HMCS Okanagan, First Canadian Submarine Squadron, HMCS Huron and held senior staff appointments in Ottawa and Norfolk, Virginia. He was also Executive Officer in HMCS Protecteur during operations in the Gulf War in 1990-91.
Cdr Scherber was awarded the Gulf and Kuwait Medal for service in the Gulf and the United States Meritorious Service Medal while on exchange duties with the United States Navy. He was held in high esteem within our Navy and submarine communities in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom-noted particularly for his leadership, integrity and loyalty.
During the past decade, Frank appreciated very much the care and support provided by the Edinburgh Residence and during his final days the staff at Montfort Hospital.
His remains are in the care of Kelly's Funeral Home Orleans Ottawa and he will be interred in the Beechwood National Military Cemetery in Ottawa. (The Ottawa Citizen 12 Oct 2024)
