Book of Remembrance

BURNFIELD, George William, AB, 3315, RCN, MPK - 25 Jun 1940, HMCS RESTIGOUCHE - Son of William and Hazel Burnfield of Victoria, BC.

AB Burnfield drowned while taking part in the rescue of HMCS FRASER'S crew. There was a heavy swell running and while attempting to bring the whaler alongside RESTIGOUCHE, the whaler drifted under the stern counter and the ships stern came down on the gunwhale of the whaler, capsizing it and throwing all occupants into the water. All the boats crew and FRASER'S survivors made it to the scrambling nets with the exception of AB Burnfield.  No one saw him drown as they were all swimming to the nets.  His body was not found.
