HMCS SUNBEAM

Acquired by RCN: 1940 

Commissioned: 11 Nov 1940

Paid off: 13 Dec 1945

Fate: Broken up in 1968

 

Built in Port Glasgow, NS, she was launched in 1911. Formerly the Department of Transport Hopper Barge No. 4, she was acquired by the RCN in 1940 and converted to a fuel oil carrier. SUNBEAM was commissioned on 11 Nov 1940, and served as a lighter at Halifax and St. John's and occasionally as a transport. Paid off on 13 Dec 1945, and sold into commercial service, she was renamed BIRCHBRANCH in 1949. Her register was closed in 1968, as she had been broken up.
