JUCHLI, Andre Auguste (Andy) - DSM & Bar, MID and Alberta Centennial Medal. On June 29, 2006, Mr. Andre (Andy) Juchli of Edmonton passed away at the age of 82 years. He leaves to mourn his loss his loving wife Hazel; sons, Douglas (Susan), Kenn (Josephine), Richard (Cathy); loving grandchildren, Bryan, Jennifer, Kaylyn and Charles; brother, Maurice (Barbara); sister-in-law, Margaret Juchli; many nieces, nephews, and adopted families. He was predeceased by two brothers, Marcel and Armand. Andre served four years in the RCNVR Special Services Coastal Forces on MTB's. Andre received three of his medals from King George VI. At the time of his passing, Andre was the highest decorated non commissioned officer in the Canadian Navy. Andre was a member of Strathcona Lodge #77 A.F. & A.M. G.R.A., and received his 50 year Jewel; founding Charter Member of Al Shamal Shriners; Life member of the Legion of Honor of Al Shamal Shrine and Honorary Life Member of the Edmonton Shrine Motor Corps, a member of the Royal Order of Jesters, a Member of Strathcona Branch #150 Royal Canadian Legion. A Private Family Service was held. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 24, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Grace United Church, 6215 - 104 Avenue with Reverend Dr. Tom Forgrave officiating. Andre's wife, Hazel Juchli (née Campbell), served in the WRCNS during the Second World War.
Juchlie Avenue in Edmonton was named after PO Andre Juchli.
Juchli Avenue was dedicated to Andre Juchli (1923-2006) by the Canada Lands Company on August 25, 2010, as part of their redevelopment of Edmonton’s former Canadian Forces Base (Griesbach Barracks).
Juchli enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve in March 1943. He served as Chief Engineer aboard motor torpedo boats and motor gun boats of the Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy. He was involved in many deadly encounters with German E-boats in the English Channel, the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay.
He was one of the most highly decorated non-commissioned officers in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. Juchli took part in missions rescuing survivors from the English Channel as well as ferrying undercover agents between England and Europe. He was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal for action against enemy forces in June 1944 while serving on MTB 246. He was awarded a Bar to his Distinguished Service Medal for bravery in action on September 30, 1944, having used exceptional skill and bravery to help save his vessel that was holed and under fire. Juchli was also Mentioned in Dispatches in April 1945 when his motor torpedo boat was hit by a German incendiary shell and his quick action saved both the ship and its crew.
