George Scott Miller

MILLER, George Scott - was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on May 29, 1916. His parents were Stanley Creighton Miller, a lumber merchant, and Bessie McVittie Scott, a homemaker. He grew up in Moose Jaw, where he played and coached the 1936 Moose Jaw Canucks to the Saskatchewan Amateur Ice Hockey Championship. In 1938 Scott was recruited to UCLA to play ice hockey. He was president of his fraternity and captain of the hockey team. At UCLA, Scott met Dorothy Dodge whom he married on November 29, 1941. He earned a B.S. degree in Economics at UCLA.

 

Scott returned to Canada to join the RCNVR in April 1942. He and Dorothy then moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Scott served on the HMCS Wasaga, stationed at Halifax, and St. John's, Newfoundland. In 1943 he was assigned to HMCS Matane. His ship patrolled in British and French coastal waters, and was part of the D-Day Invasion Forces in the English Channel.

 

After the war, Scott and Dorothy returned to California where Scott attended Hastings College of Law, receiving his law degree in 1949. They settled near Los Angeles, in Whittier, where they raised their five children. Scott was an active participant in community affairs and in his children's activities. He served as President of the Whittier Bar Association, and on the Vestry of St. Matthias Episcopal Church, and was president of the Whittier UCLA Alumni Association.

 

The Miller family made many trips to Canada over the years, keeping strong ties to relatives and friends in Winnipeg, Moose Jaw, and Kenora. He and Dorothy also held a five-decades-long tradition of attending UCLA football games with longtime college friends. Scott was an avid golfer and member of Hacienda Golf Club. He was a Rotarian in both Whittier and Del Mar, where he and Dorothy retired in 1982.

 

Scott passed away September 29, 1996, and Dorothy on April 22, 2008. They are survived by their children Stanley Miller, Derick Miller (Nel Miller), Bruce Miller, Nancy Miller, and Maureen Miller, ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
