In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
WARNEKEN, Edward Vincent Neil - 70, of Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2014 surrounded by close friends and family at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Born June 19, 1944 in Grace Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia to Hans and Phyllis Warneken, he spent all his life as proud Canadian and true BC man. He had a colourful childhood growing up in Vancouver, and ventured to Alberta for work at young age, before returning to BC to join the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy), living abroad off and on for the next 30 years, calling Victoria, Duncan and Shawnigan Lake home. Ed lived the last 46 amazing years on beautiful Vancouver Island with his world travelling partner, best friend and loving wife, Sheila. Ed was an intelligent and passionate man who loved and enjoyed his family and friends, travelling, camping, Sudoku, playing board games, sailing, golfing, foraging on the beach, bike riding, the ocean and watching TV (particularly golf). He especially loved cheering for his granddaughters, friends, niece and nephew in all of their various sports and accomplishments. (Thank you Pa!) He was a talented woodworker, gadget guy and sailor, and amongst so many other things, he carefully chose the best greeting cards and flowers, always. He was funny, competitive, sassy, loving and kind… he believed whole-heartedly in all he did and everything and everyone he supported. Predeceased by parents Hans and Phyllis Warneken; uncle Emmett Warneken; nephew Darryl Laing; and parents-in-law Herb and Betty Chandler. Ed leaves behind his loving wife Sheila (nee Chandler) of 46 years; daughter Sara (Wade) Lowe; and two granddaughters Haeley and Sydnae Lowe. Also, his Canadian family (in-laws), Diane (Bob) Caldwell, Ken (Trish) Pollard, John (Di) Pollard, Cheryl (Bill) Dickenson, Marley, Chelsey and extended families. His Australian family (in- laws) Tricia Moritz, Grace, Christian, Oliver and Billy. Ed's sister, Mary Lou (Don) Laing; nieces Shelley and Sharla; and families in the interior of BC. As well, Ed's cousin, Hans Gerd (Juda) Warneken, and their wonderful family in Oerlinghausen, Germany. Ed also leaves behind so many close special friends, neighbours, "girlfriends," amazing adopted families and quite a few adopted pets, including one especially loyal buddy, Tito. Master Seaman Edward V.N. Warneken served 27 years in the C.A.F. (Navy), as a Naval Weapons technician, on Ships such as HMCS Terra Nova, HMCS Gatineau, HMCS Mackenzie and more. As Senior Ship's diver, and longest standing mess president of the Junior Ranks Club Esquimalt, he implemented programs that are still used today, and risked his life in the Tasmanian Sea. After the Navy, Ed worked a variety of interesting positions, as a technician, fish farmer and commissionaire, and finally retired from working as Medical Security at Arbutus Ridge, which he enjoyed immensely. Four days after officially retiring in 2011, Ed with Sheila, and their love of travel, hopped on a plane to Mexico, where they found their second home in a condo in San Jose del Cabo. Shortly after they embarked on the trip of lifetime, and travelled around the world for over a year, meeting and making, friends and family, all over the world! They headed back home in 2013 after an amazing year to remember. Ed made his mark on our world with Sheila, as we all followed the "Travels of Nan and Pa" and were inspired by their adventures, and love for each other and the people and places they graced. We would like to give special thanks, to the Nurses and Doctors at VGH and the Royal Jubilee Hospital for their passionate care for our loving husband, father, friend, uncle, great-uncle and devoted Pa, who will be greatly missed. "It was too soon, but with infinite great, hilarious, sometimes crazy, thought provoking, interesting and heartfelt, tender memories, all full of love… we will see you when we close our eyes, forever and always."~Anon. A Celebration of Life, filled with Love, Joy and Happiness will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. on at Cowichan Cricket Club, 1722 Elford Road, Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia. If attending, please consider wearing something bright-coloured to celebrate Ed's full and happy, colourful life. Thank you to Dave and Sands Funeral Chapel Duncan for all of the arrangements, to ALL of our many friends and family for their continuous support and help, now and in the future. Ed's Remains will rest in the waters off of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada and San Jose Del Cabo, BCS, Mexico, so he can forever remain in peace, close to both homes, amongst the waves and his favourite creatures of the Sea. Memorial donations may be made in Ed's name to Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) at www.standup2cancer.ca or the BC Cancer Foundation, Vancouver Island Office, 2410 Lee Avenue, Victoria, BC V8R 6V5.
