OAKLEY, Victor Sydney, Tel, V34242, RCNVR, MPK - 07 May 1944, HMCS VALLEYFIELD - Son of Victor J. and Florence Oakley, of London, Ontario.
Telegraphist Oakley died when his ship, HMCS VALLEYFIELD, was torpedoed and sunk on 07 May 1944 by U-548. Of her crew of 163, there were only 38 survivors.
Telegraphist Victor Sydney Oakley, age 23 celebrated his birthday a short time ago somewhere on the Atlantic while on convoy duty. He was born in England but moved to London, Ontario while a boy. He was educated at Lady Beck Public School and the H.B. Beal Technical High School. He transferred from the Army to the Navy two year ago. Following a year on shore duty at Halifax he has been H.M.C.S. Valleyfield assigned to convoy work. He is the Son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor J. and Florence Oakley, King Street, London. His father was wounded at Ypres while fighting with the 18th battalion in the last war; he has been a patient at Westminster military hospital for 15 years.
