In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
FRASER, Edison Clyde - Bedford, passed away February 28, 2003. Born in 1924, Ed spent his early years in Eastern Passage. He was a brave and adventurous youth, who at the age of 15 ran away to join the Merchant Navy. On becoming "of age" he joined the RCN serving on the Corvettes on "The Triangle Run" during the Second World War. He remained in the Navy as a PTI, traveling the world, honing his athletic skills and becoming a devoted family man. Ed was an exceptional athlete who's skill traversed many disciplines. He was an avid promoter of the Antigonish Highland Games where he both competed and officiated for many years. He held provincial records in Javelin, squash and gymnastics but participated in all sports and coached and instructed in many. On retirement from the Navy, after 28 years, Ed became the Director of Residences at the Halifax School of the Blind, where his foresight and courage helped break down barriers both literally and figuratively. His advocacy for the individuality of the young people there helped many to break the bons of institutionalization forever. Ed believed that fun and adventure should be an integral part of childhood. As a result, he and his wife Margaret devoted an entire year to raising funds, buying a bus and, along with one other adult, taking seventeen teenagers from the School for the Blind on a summer long trip across all 10 Provinces of the country he loved. He and Margaret also became directors of Rainbow Haven Camp in Cow Bay. They devoted many summers to showering their special love on the children who attended the camp. His courage and integrity shone through in every aspect of his life, and no less so than over the last seven and a half years during which, confined to a wheelchair and unable to verbalize, he still managed a frequent "I love you" and continued to lead his family providing a glowing example of a positive attitude. He leaves behind, Margaret, his devoted and loving wife of 58 years; sons, David (Charlotte), Bedford; Skip, British Columbia; sisters, Goldie and Geraldine; brothers, Gerald and Buzz; grandchildren, Jason and Sandrelle, British Columbia; Neale and Scott, Bedford; one great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Cruikshanks Funeral Home. Visitation will be held 2 p.m. in Cruikshanks Funeral Home, 2032 Robie St., Halifax, until time of service at 3 p.m. Monday in Cruikshanks Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Sir Frederick Fraser School for the Blind, Halifax. "Sailing Home"
