MERRIAM, James H. (Jim) - Age 88, of Parrsboro passed away peacefully on Monday, November 25, 2024 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst. Born at Spencer’s Island, he was a son of the late Clifton ‘Kip’ and Laurine (Morrissey) Merriam. Jim joined the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) as an OSRP in 1954. He served on 13 different ships as a radar plotter and an officer. His last ship was as Executive Officer on HMCS Cormorant. Jim served staff positions in fleet school HMCS Scotian and Marcom Headquarters. He retired in 1991. Jim was a life member of the Parrsborough Shore Historical Society, honorary life member of the Parrsboro Golf Club, a member and Past Master of Minas Masonic Lodge No. 67, Parrsboro. He was a long serving member of Parrsboro Legion Branch, #45. Jim is survived by his wife, the former Marion Gavin; a daughter, Andrea Archer (Ranald), Houston, Texas; a son, James ‘Jay’ (Sherry), Victoria, BC; sisters, Sonja, Montreal; Cynthia, Louisiana; brothers, Clifton ‘Kip’, Peterborough, Ont.; Breen, Michigan; grandchildren, Michael and Brian Archer (Veerle Lubbers); Carly (Curtis Benjamin) and Corey Merriam (Emma Nelson); Jordan Treimanis (Emmet Potter). He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara (Berry). Funeral services will be held in the Summer of 2025. Details to be announced at a later date. Memorial donations in Jim’s memory may be made to St. Brigid’s Catholic Church, Parrsboro or to a charity of your choice.
