BOURNS, John Desmond - Peacefully, at K-Wing of Sunnybrook Hospital, on Thursday, November 18, 1999, after a lengthy struggle with Lewy Body Disease. Survived by his wife Helen and sons Michael, James of Yellowknife and Richard. Beloved grandfather of Andrew, Erin, Jordan and Matthew. Survived by his brother William of Deep River, sister Gwenda McIlroy of Winnipeg and sister Patricia. John was born in Cahir, Tipperary, Ireland, February 22nd, 1920. He emigrated to Vancouver in 1929 and studied engineering at U.B.C. He graduated while serving with the Canadian Navy. While in the navy he served on H.M.C.S. Stonetown, H.M.C.S. St. Laurent and H.M.C.S. Qu'Appelle. He ended service on H.M.C.S. Uganda, on her tour around North and South America in 1946. After leaving the navy he moved to Ontario to work for Canadian Ice Machine on the construction of Sunnybrook Hospital. In 1947 he moved to Sarnia to work for Polymer. In 1948 he joined Ontario Hydro in Toronto, and remained with them for 35 years, retiring in 1983. While at Hydro he worked on the design and construction of Sir Adam Beck and Nanticoke among others. At his retirement he was Project Services Coordinator at Darlington. John was an avid gardener and badminton player. He was one of the first pioneers in the southwest quadrant of Don Mills in 1954. Funeral Service will be held at Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Avenue West (2 lights west of Yonge at Lascelles Boulvard), on Thursday at 2 p.m., (416) 489-8733.
