In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar

Mark Hamilton Mansfield

Lieutenant (N) (MARS), C.A.F. (Navy)

Born: 23 May 1959

Died: 25 Dec 2023, Newport Beach, California, USA

MANSFIELD, Mark Hamilton - Mark passed away unexpectedly on Christmas Day 2023 at the age of 64 in Newport Beach, CA, where he resided.

Cherished father to daughters Morgan and Catherine and son Maclean. Proud Grandfather of Aroura. Close sibling to sister Catherine (Paul Nemy), and brothers Peter (Marilee) and Paul (Elaine). Predeceased by parents Enid and Peter Mansfield. Uncle to Hyla, Nicola, Samuel, Claire, Liam and Adam. It is with profound sadness that we say goodbye to a spirited, highly accomplished and deeply spiritual man. Mark looked after many of us. He educated still more of us through his tireless and inquisitive research into global affairs, international business, ethics and morality based philosophy. Mark’s work ethic was unmatched and quite possibly a contributor to leaving a life on this earth where he would have continued to influence, nurture and make positive change.

Mark was born in Ottawa in 1959 and was raised in Fonthill, ON, where he attended E.L. Crossley Secondary School. Upon graduation he enlisted as a Royal Military College cadet where he was a member of Lasalle Flight at RRMC in Victoria from 1978 to 1980 and later with #8 Mackenzie Squadron at RMC in Kingston from 1980 to 1982. Throughout his time at both colleges, he epitomized kindness and courteous fellowship to all, combined profound intellectual and scholarly rigour with humility and a joyful free spirit. Whether through these attributes, his charitable nature, or his uncannily attractive charm, many of his RMC classmates and Navy colleagues fondly rank shared activities with Mark among the most hilarious, morale-boosting, and fun episodes of their lives.

Mark was athletic, academically gifted, and carried with him a life-long interest in and support for the Canadian Armed Forces. He was also exceptionally humble; indeed, his classmates were stunned when, on graduation, he received a Governor-General’s Award for outstanding academic performance. Mark marked his four years of service as a MARS (Naval Warfare) officer in Esquimalt with HMCS Yukon and HMCS Terra Nova, while based in Victoria. Post-release, he was a project manager for Paramax in Montreal overseeing systems integration for the Halifax-class frigates. Mark obtained an MBA from Harvard University in 1990 and pursued a long successful career in corporate finance, investment banking, and business management.

He was most recently a Principal with Global Capital Markets Corporation in Irvine California, a lecturer at UCLA and other post-secondary institutions, and a leader in the region’s Harvard Business School Alumni Association. He retained his interest in military activities, expressing them within a financial or investment context during an online series of podcasts, called “STRAT” (Strategic Risk Assessment Talk) that were partnered with a USMC veteran colleague. For his universal sympathy and kindness to others, Mark was loved. Often at great personal sacrifice, his entire adult life was devoted to serving family, friends, colleagues, and strangers, but especially his children and grand-daughter. He greatly treasured and practiced the Christian faith which he credited as the source and guide for his countless acts of courtesy, generosity, love, his stoic acceptance of joy and suffering, and his irreproachable integrity in relation to his business dealings.

To honour Mark, do or be something you valued or respected in him. Donations can be made to a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life will be held at Fonthill United Church, Fonthill, ON, on Saturday May 11th at 1:00pm. (The Pelham Today 28 Mar 2024)
