Commander, C.A.F. (Navy)

Born: 04 Jul 1955, Singhampton, Ontario

Died: 17 Dec 2023, Ottawa, Ontario

BELL, Steven Albert - It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Commander Steven Bell, MSM, CD, RCN (Retired) in the Ottawa Heart Institute. Steve is survived by his wife Barbara, son William and daughter Katie, as well as his brother Robert (Ruth) and several nieces and nephews.

Growing up in Singhampton, Ontario; Steve joined the navy in 1974 at the age of 19, right out of high school. Well liked by all, he was known among his naval contemporaries for his quick wit, charismatic leadership skills and abilities as a warfare office. Steve served initially in HMCS MARGAREE as a senior air controller, moving on to be the weapons officer and later in his career executive officer in HMCS OTTAWA. He served ashore in a variety of positions in CF Bases Halifax and Chilliwack, as well as in NDHQ Ottawa. Steve served overseas in Bahrain in 2001 and in Naples, Italy in 2008 to 2010. On retirement in 2015 he became a contractor working in the Canadian Forces Joint Operations Command.

Steve's family remembers him as an intelligent and caring father of William (mother Louise Siew) and Katie (mother Barbara Bell). He dedicated himself to the well being of his children, offering guidance, support, and a listening ear whenever needed. He encouraged Will's interest in archeology and supported Katie's equestrian pursuits. An avid reader and student of military history, Steve turned that interest into a master's degree in Defence Studies from the Royal Military College, Kingston.

His family invites everyone to a celebration of life for Steve on January 28, 2024 at the Orleans Legion, 800 Taylor Creek Dr., Orleans ON K4A 0Z9 at 12:00. The event will be on the first floor.

Recognizing the extraordinary care he received as a patient the family asks for donations to the Ottawa Heart Institute in lieu of flowers. (Ottawa Cremation Service)
