METCALFE, Donald Irving, EA 3c, V11603, RCNVR, MPK - 29 Apr 1944, HMCS ATHABASKAN - Son of Peter and Isabella Metcalfe, of Kelvington, Saskatchewan; husband of Lillian Irene Metcalfe, of Vancouver, British Columbia.
EA Metcalfe died when his ship, HMCS ATHABASKAN, was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel during the Second World War.
Electrical Artificer Donald Irving Metcalfe of Saskatoon was the son of Peter Metcalfe, a Boer War veteran, and Isabella (Irving) who came from Scotland in 1904 to homestead northeast of Rosetown. Peter bought grain at Kelvington from 1922. Donald was born at Delisle, educated at Kelvington and was working as a mechanic and service manager for J.H. Early Motors when he enlisted on December 10, 1940 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. His wife Lillian Irene lived at Vancouver after the war, and his brother Earl served in the R.C.A.F. overseas.
The province of Saskatchewan honoured Electrical Artificer Metcalfe by naming Metcalfe Lake in his honour.
